Program Description

Event Details

In honor of Women’s History Month, we will explore the life and art of Alma Woodsey Thomas. Thomas created abstract expressionist paintings and was known for her use of bright color and pattern. After 38 years of teaching public school in Washington, D.C. her career as a painter was finally launched. Alma Thomas was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. There is SO MUCH to discover about this amazing woman; come join us and try our hand at painting some beautiful patterns of color inspired by this great female artist.

In this monthly program, instructor Jennifer will guide us through some art history and then lead us in creating our own works of art. Some months we will take a look at a specific artist, or sometimes an entire art movement, always considering the medium the artists worked in, looking at samples of their work, and finally trying our hand at a project inspired by the artist or art movement.

Attendees must be a Mammen Family Public Library card holder. Please include your library card number on the registration form below so that we can confirm your registration.
