Event Details
This program is brought to us by Craig Bruska from the Native Plant Society of Texas.
This engaging and informative talk will guide attendees through the fundamentals of seed collection, with a special focus on native plants. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of what seeds are, how they develop, and the critical role they play in plant reproduction and ecosystem health.
The talk will highlight specific native plant species that typically produce ripe seeds in the fall, helping attendees recognize signs of seed readiness and prioritize what to collect. Practical demonstrations will cover a variety of seed collecting techniques, from hand collection to using simple tools, as well as tips on how to avoid damaging plants or disturbing habitats.
Additionally, participants will learn best practices for drying, cleaning, labeling, and storing seeds to ensure long-term viability and successful future germination. Whether you're a gardener, restoration volunteer, land steward, or simply curious about native flora, this workshop will equip you with the knowledge and skills to ethically and effectively collect native seeds this fall.
