Program Description
Event Details
Join us for a conversation with artists Christiane Anctil Govan and Edward Govan, whose work will be featured in the library's hallway exhibit from January 14th through February 15th.
Christiane Anctil Govan is a French Canadian artist who came to live in California in her early twenties. She studied Art and Archaeology at UCLA in her free time while working as a photo retoucher in Los Angeles which became her home. She specialized in entertainment and was mostly retouching celebrities/people which transferred perfectly with her love of drawing/ painting in pastels. She later worked as an Art Buyer/Art Producer in major Ad agencies once photo retouching went digital. Christiane started drawing portraits and figure in pencil/charcoal as a teenager and still loves drawing them today. Most of the work you see here was done in more recent years and all using pastels after her retirement from advertising and moving to the state of Texas. She is inspired by the Impressionist French painters such as Renoir and Degas. She works tandem with her husband, Edward Govan, who is also an artist painting mostly with acrylics and also provides the beautiful framing seen here for her work.

As a child Edward Govan had a talent for doing art. The only resources he had was pencil, pen and ink using sheets of school paper. His parents encouraged his art abilities through his high school years when his talent was noticed by a newspaper editor who asked that he provide various drawings for a company newspaper. He was not paid for any of this work, however he was able to get summer employment at the company. His art career ended upon graduation from high school and he was drafted into the military. He spent 20 years in the military and never thought he would do any art for the rest of his life. After military retirement he decided to get back into art via photography, pen and ink, pastel, acrylic, and oil painting.
